History

The Kieran name has been synonymous with the pharmacy profession for three generations, stretching back to 1920, when Patrick Kieran opened his first premises on High Street, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim.

The following year, he moved to a larger premises on Main Street, formerly known as Davidson’s Post Office and Draper’s Store.

In 1925, he opened a Medical Hall in Drumshanbo, which was subsequently run by his brother Michael, and Michael’s wife, Alice (nee Bouchier Hayes).

Three years later, he opened another Medical Hall, in Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan under the stewardship of his sister Margaret, and her husband, Jim Byrne.

On Patrick’s retirement in 1959, his sons Brendan and Desmond took over the management of the premises in Ballinamore, thus guaranteeing a second generation of pharmacists in the family.

In 1968, Brendan moved to Carrick-on-Shannon, where he purchased the business of Herbert Harman, a second-generation pharmacist, located on Main Street, beside the well-known Bush Hotel.

At the same time, Desmond and his wife Sheelagh, formed a partnership with his sister Nuala, and her husband Charlie Browne to run the Ballinamore premises.

In 1974, Charlie and Nuala bought their own Pharmacy in Cootehill, Co. Cavan, where their daughter, Aedine continues to operate as a Community Pharmacist.

In 2001, Brendan moved to a larger premises on Main Street, Carrick-on-Shannon, formerly Doherty’s Bakery, where he established Brencopharm Ltd., trading as Kieran’s Pharmacy, with fellow directors, wife Margaret, and son Brendan (Jnr), now a third generation Pharmacist.

In 2004, Brencopharm Ltd., set up a second Pharmacy in Mohill, Co. Leitrim, which is currently managed by Helke Schramm, MPSI.
